After winning Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Fiji went through a post Olympics slump losing coach Ben Ryan and retaining only three players from their Gold medal winning squad. Despite this, Fiji placed third in the World Series Sevens after winning the Hong Kong tournament and placing second at the Dubai, Wellington and Las Vegas tournaments. At the recent Oktoberfest Sevens in Munich, Fiji came in second place after losing to Australia in the final. With a number of young development players in the squad, Fiji will be looking to strengthen their team and improve on last year’s results.
Fiji is and island nation comprising of 333 islands, however only 110 of them are inhabited. Over three quarters of the 800,000 population live on the main island of Viti Levu, where the capital city of Suva is situated.

Mesulame Kunavula is a Fijian youngster who made his debut on the World Sevens Series circuit in the 2016/2017 season. He particularly impressed at the Las Vegas leg of the World Series where he make the tournament’s Dream Team – scoring five tries throughout competition. At just 20 years old, Vunavula is the youngest member of the Fijian squad and will be pushing himself to get noticed amongst the bunch.
