The Australian Men’s Sevens team finished off the World Series Sevens in 6th place overall, with their best finish coming in Hong Long – where they finished 3rd. The Aussies’ last tournament win was back in 2012 in Tokyo, until recently when they took out the title for the Oktoberfest Sevens in Munich and the Silicon Valley Sevens in San Jose. Since placing 8th at the Rio Olympics, the Aussie Mens Sevens squad have undergone a major overhaul, and added some new faces to their ranks. Australia lost out to New Zealand in the third place playoff at the 2017 Sydney Sevens and will be eager to improve on this in 2018.
If you visited a new beach everyday in Australia, it would take over 27 years to see them all.
Player(s) to watch:
Simon Kennewell made his debut for the Australian Sevens at the Dubai tournament in 2016 and has since signed on to play with the team until the end of 2019. At only 20 years old, Kennewell has strengthened into one of the dominant players of the team and has represented Australia in both Sevens and in the Australian U20s. With nine caps and already 18 tries under his belt for the Aussie Sevens, Kennewell will be one to watch.
Ben O’Donnell is a fresh face among the Aussie Sevens squad, although he has been apart of the extended squad since late 2016. O’Donnell has experience in both 7s and XVs, but excels in the fast paced nature of 7s. O’Donnell was a force to be reckoned with in his debut with the Aussie Sevens in Munich for the Oktoberfest Sevens. The young speedster was integral for the team in the final against Fiji where he helped to put 20 points on the board, the end score 40 – 7.
